Después de unos 3 años de espera, por fin saldrá, publicada por la editorial norteamericana IDW, la antología de comics INKSHOT (organizada por Hector Lima, Pablo Casado, George Schall y Felipe Cunha) la cual tiene 264 páginas y fue realizada exclusivamente por brasileños. Mi viejo dibujó una de las historias ("The Lone Heart of Barnaby Cole"), yo dibujé otra ("The Bullet Textbook") y además realicé la portada del libro.

Saldrá en enero del 2012 y ya se puede encargar via Amazon.

"No, seriously. Some hideous legal loophole in Simon & Burns' contract. Your company has the rights to an animated-series spin-off of THE WIRE. This happens. Remember when there was going to be a BUFFY animated series?

And, you know, it only has to bear the most tangential relationship to the show.

OR it could be as close to the show as you want.

It can be any adaptation, re-imagining, re-genre-ing or...whatever the fuck you want, so long as it looks like it came from THE WIRE, right? So long as people can look at it and somehow trace it back to the original series. Anything you want.

AT LAST! The Transmetropolitan Charity Art Book is out, and I can finally reveal the piece I did.

I chose to do a spoof ad for one of the products that appeared in the series ("Ebola Cola, the hemorrhage that refreshes") in a sort of retro/futuristic style.

Can't wait to see it on the actual book.

This is an actual movie poster I did for a friend, Danyella Proença, who directed a short documentary about Brazilian poet Nicolas Behr and asked me to do the poster.

Behr was famous in the 70s for publishing independently some little self-made booklets with his poems and scribbles, and I attempted to give that same feeling to the poster.

This was for a REMAKE/REMODEL creative exercise over at Warren Ellis' Whitechapel forum. This were the instructions:

"INSTRUCTIONS:

At first Jeff Hawke, presented as an ex-R.A.F. pilot (just like Jordan) was a rather ordinary, Flash Gordon-like heroic character... In 1956 William Patterson joined his childhood friend Jordan, (and) Patterson made Jeff Hawke the first science fiction (newspaper) comic strip for adults.

Gorgeous, contrasty black-and-white stuff. Like much comics sf of this era, no matter how they try to suggest it's in Teh Future, it all looks like the mid-Fifties in Britain, just with zappier cars.

The three frames format of the daily strip made it hard to create vivid action scenes, so the stories centred more on dialogue than on action and violence (although these do occur).

But mostly it was about really pretty images. Even the insides of spaceships tended to become smoky gothic interiors.

The Jeff Hawke character himself became more and more focused on reasoning, diplomacy and moral virtues instead of brute force and bravery, and he is frequently forced by circumstances to be the ambassador of mankind in front of alien species. There are many circumstances in which Jeff Hawke is more an observer than a participant.

Some of it is actually incredibly smart, witty and complex stuff.

The real main characters in Jeff Hawke were the aliens. The universe of Jeff Hawke was highly populated with strange alien species that came in contact with humans for various reasons – accidental contact, commercial interests, and so on, but hardly ever for invasion. The plots of Jeff Hawke turned around the seemingly endless, baroque diversity of aliens and their worlds, their contacts with humans, and the ability of Hawke and his friends to manage relationships with so many different entities.

Also he was once accosted in a Cornish pub by aliens.

Jeff Hawke: A well-educated, ex-pilot, with an outstanding scientific and archaeological knowledge and a seraphic, ironic attitude. He usually wears a sober suit and a necktie, unless when he's forced to use a spacesuit (which happens quite often).

He does get to fly spaceships, yes.

YOUR JOB: taking what you now know from the above, design the cover for a book of JEFF HAWKE stories, called JEFF HAWKE."

I went for a mignolesque composition, although not entirely successfully...

This week over at Whitechapel, Warren Ellis gave us the task to come up with a cover redesign for ZAP COMIX #1, the famous 1960s counterculture comics magazine launched by Crumb, Spain and many other underground icons.

I recently discovered the work of Eduardo Recife, who makes some very interesting collages using old artwork... this is a sort of attempt to drink from the same souce of inspiration.

The tiny man in the cover is Nikola Tesla, the big painting at the bottom is a fragment of "Jupiter and Thetis" by Ingres. The wallpaper is a Victorian pattern I found online. The coil is from a Tesla invention (the alternator, perhaps? - not sure).

Hoy subió a El Libro Rosa mi minicomic (de 2 paginitas apenas) "La Copa", inspirado en el clásico bolero lobo de Alci Acosta... Dado que el tema de este proyecto es hacer comics que sean melodramáticos o que traten de melodrama, se me hizo perfecta como punto de partida.

... y en otro proyecto colombiano, Comic Road, subió hoy NOSOTROS CONTRA ELLOS, un comic que dibujé hace unos años y que poca gente ha visto (la versión en inglés salió en Defective Comix, antología que Alex publicó en el Reino Unido, el tiraje fue minúsculo). Esta versión es en español y tiene 26 páginas.

A ver que les parece!

Dice Warren Ellis:

"So here's the deal:

You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for issue 15 of a comic called AMAZING ADULT FANTASY.

Now, the publisher has decreed that, with #15, the title will become simply AMAZING FANTASY. But, I dunno, you're a drunk, or a drug fiend, or you have seizures or something, and you've totally forgotten about that. AMAZING ADULT FANTASY it is.

Thing is, there's a new character to be introduced on the cover. You remember that instruction. But you lost all the notes and pages -- you used them for bedding or toilet paper, you don't really recall. You know nothing about that character beyond its name, and that it apparently fits in a book called AMAZING ADULT FANTASY (which was once subtitled "The magazine that respects your intelligence").

All you know that is the title is AMAZING ADULT FANTASY, the issue number is 15, and there has to be a character called SPIDER-MAN on the cover somewhere.

Esta es la versión rechazada que hice para el calendario brasileño PINDURA 2010. Fueron invitados un montón de dibujantes y la idea era utilizar siempre el mismo tipo de paradero de buses en segundo plano (estos son muy específicamente de Brasília, la ciudad donde vivo y donde fue organizado todo esto). "Mr. E appealed for guidance and assistance to a statue of a ancient tribal god named King Kolah which he housed in a subterranean temple beneath his home. Kolah presented Mr. E with visions that led him to criminals. The idol also gave Mr. E the assistance of his elven messengers. The messengers were small gnome-like creatures who could shapeshift into a variety of creatures and wreaked mischief against Mr. E's enemies. One of the messengers was named Butch. Mr. E used his visions and assistant gnomes to fight crime in Washington DC. Mr. E dated a girl named Miss Terry."

Este fue divertidísimo de hacer... El personaje, un loco visionario que interactúa con gnomos asistentes y estatuas de dioses paganos me sonó de entrada como siendo algo salido de un comic de Mike Mignola, entonces seguí ese camino y le hice este homenaje.

"Atoma was a historian from the year 2446, a time of peace. She befriends Dusty Rhodes, an ordinary 20th century kid who becomes a time traveler when he is thrown 500 years into the future. Atoma knew of his arrival from reading his memoirs and was waiting for him. They teamed up to stop a robot riot, putting it to a halt with Dusty's slingshot. While Atoma has no super-powers, she does wear EDF (electronic directional flight) control nylon-xenton wings which allow her to fly."

"In the near future, Mars, god of War, has succeeded in destroying all of Earth's universities in an attempt to inflict a new dark age on humanity. However, Dr. Kort has preserved the world's knowledge and culture. To ensure that it would outlast him, he took two children, Mysta and Nors, to his moon laboratory and educated them using a hypno-transmitter. Unfortunately, Mars possessed Nors, killing Dr. Kort and trying to kill Mysta as well. She saw through the ruse, however, and killed Nors in order to free him from Mars' control and banish the villain from the corporal plane.

Members of the team include Cocky Roche, who was a cockney, and the Judge, an old Englishman turned down by the R.A.F. because of his age. The last member was "The Turtle," A Polish mute whose tongue was cut out by Germans and who communicated by tapping on his own head in Morse Code. The group flew special planes that split in half to become separate vehicles. In fact, Skywolf and his team were such an effective group of Nazi fighters that Adolf Hitler himself was desperate to get rid of them to the point of actually participating in a plan to capture them. Skywolf teamed up with Airboy and battled the monstrous Heap during the course of his adventures."

"Quentin Locke (played by Harry Houdini) was created by Charles Logue and appeared in The Master Mystery (1919). (Okay, technically speaking he's a man in a metal suit.) Q the Automaton has on his/its side the Dictagraph, an advanced eavesdropping device, DeLuxe Dora, a femme fatale, and the rare Oriental poison, Dhatura Stramonium, but they're all no match for Quentin Locke, an escape artist extraordinaire and creator of an explosive bullet which puts paid to Q." "The Ghost Exterminator was created by Gelett Burgess and appeared in Cosmopolitan and possibly a few other magazines from 1904 through 1906.

The Exterminator is Hoku Tamanochi, a Japanese San Franciscan who uses an ancient Japanese formula and his family's traditional skills to exorcise the ghosts of San Francisco. Hoku sprays the ghosts with an ancient Japanese powder when he finds them; this turns them semi-solid, and he then uses a bellows to capture them. He then seals them in bottles, thus permanently trapping them."

Click Rush, the Gadget Man, was created by Lester Dent and appeared in Crime Busters from 1937 to 1938. Rush was a tall, lean, strong young man with brown hair and eyes. (Brown was his favorite color; he usually dressed all in brown.) Rush was an amateur investigator who invented gadgets towards this end. He'd come to the "big city" with the "notion of selling super-modern, crook-catching gadgets to the police." After the cops laughed him out of the station house he went out on his own.

Well, okay. He was prompted by a talking toad: Bufa, of the species Bufonidae, which feeds on snails, slugs, insects, and such undesirable things.... "(I'm) eager to hire an expert private detective to investigate crimes I think need solving." The toad succeeds in convincing Click to solve crime (the $10,000 fee for each crime helped, too.) but proved to be an only average boss, enjoying giving Click the razz and showing a mean sense of humour.

"One of the more outré of the pulp characters—and given the genre, that’s quite saying something, believe me—the Octopus was actually the villain of the piece in his single issue, The Octopus v1 #4, 1939, written by...well, it's not exactly clear. It might be Norvel Page, or it might be Ejler and Edith Jacobsen. A rather over-the-top mad scientist, the Octopus worked from a big city hospital and plotted world conquest. His appearance might explain his desire to dominate the world; he's sea-green, with four "suction-cupped weaving tentacles" set above "hideously malformed" legs. He wears a small mask, and behind it can be seen two enormous, luminous, purple eyes. He was the leader of the Purple Eyes, a cult bent on world domination and mass destruction. The Octopus’ chosen method was an "ultra-violet ray" which devolved men and women and turned them into deformed, life-hating monsters hungry for human flesh and glowing with “ultraviolet purple.” Against the Octopus was set Jeffrey Fairchild, a young millionaire philanthropist (he eventually stopped the Octopus, of course). He had three identities. The first was Jeffrey Fairchild, hospital administrator. The second was was kindly Dr. Skull, the old man who made a practice of helping the poor in the slums. (His good works didn’t help him when everyone thought that he was the Octopus, however) In his other identity he was the “Skull Killer,” who fought crime and left a skull-imprint, ala the Spider, on his enemies. Fairchild was assisted by Carol Endicott, Dr. Skull’s nurse."

"The Bat was created by Eden Phillpots, under his pseudonym of 'Harrington Next' and appeared in Number 87 (1922). The Bat is Paul Strossmeyer, a Yugoslav trade representative who grows concerned with the short-sightedness of various world politicians, especially with regards to the discovery and application of atomic energy. So Strossmeyer begins a series of terrorist acts, from the disintegration of the Albert Memorial to the destruction of various Christian Science churches to the assassination of several politicians, from Britain, Japan, America, and Russia. In each case the assassination was done by a needle-thin puncture near the heart and the transmutation of various elements of the body. Also in each case, a mysterious figure was seen near the crime; this figure, the Bat, is larger than a man, has glowing eyes, and leaves behind a foul stench.

Strossmeyer is the Bat, who worked with radioactivity for decades and discovered Element 87, which allows for the easy splitting of the atom and the production of enormous amounts of energy. Strossmeyer used Element 87 to power his flying suit, his weapons, and his bat-shaped aircraft, which can fly through the upper atmosphere at 100,000 miles an hour.

It all ends badly for Strossmeyer, of course, who destroys his fortress and then heads off into space to kill himself. "

El segundo dibujo en vectores que he hecho en mi vida.

Este es un homenaje a Clint Eastwood y a su más reciente película, GRAN TORINO... es un tipo de punto de encuentro entre los dramas más serios que el director ha hecho más recientemente (desde Birdie) con el ícono de acción que fue en los 60s y 70s. A mi me gustó mucho. En este dibujo traté de concilar ese Clint de ayer con el de hoy, y para la pose me basé en una foto clásica promocional de DIRTY HARRY.

Es el primer dibujo vectorial que hago en mi vida... empecé tratando de hacer algo más libre pero las limitaciones del medio me fueron frustrando y entonces opté por hacer este retrato basándome en una referencia fotografica. Normalmente no me gusta ser tan fiel a las referencias (aborrezco el arte hiperrealista) pero pues como primer ejercicio quería ver QUÉ lograba hacer con el Illustrator. A ver que les parece.

Desde hace más o menos una semana está online Comic Road, una revista virtual de autores de comic colombianos en la cual participo... la edita el buen John Joven y los que participan en este primer número son Wilson Borja, Andrezzinho, Manu Ortega, Federico Neira, y Jorge Lewis. Yo participo con mi historia "Érase una Vez...", la cual envié en español e inglés y que por algún motivo quedó en inglés en la revista (a lo mejor fue una desición editorial para que quedara evidente que aunque yo tenía el album de las chocolatinas Jet, tomaba Frescavena y me veía El Mundo Al Vuelo con Hector Mora, efectivamente estoy ahí de colado entre los autores colombianos). No se arrepentirán, está de muy buen nivel este proyecto, esperemos que siga por muchos números!

Otro rediseño para Whitechapel forum: Octobriana. La original era similar a Barbarella, y fue creada en los 60s por Peter Sadecky, quien era miembro de un grupo de artistas soviéticos disidentes llamados "Pornografía Progresista Política". Aparentemente el personaje se llamaba originalmente "Amazona", pero Sadecky les robó a los otros 2 co-creadores las páginas y las publicó desde el exilio en el occidente, alterándole el nombre a "Octobriana" y dibujándole una estrella roja en la frente.

Yo la reimaginé como una kosmonauta perdida en el espacio...
